UK economic pressure and cost of living crisis

The United Kingdom is facing significant economic pressure as various sectors call for government intervention to mitigate rising costs.

Ten major trade unions, representing over 2.3 million workers, issued an open letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham urging action on the cost of living crisis. The unions highlighted that military involvement in the Middle East is exacerbating energy and food costs. While the Prime Minister proposed cutting VAT on household energy bills, union leaders described the relief as “insufficient” for low-income families.

Simultaneously, the food and drink manufacturing sector is reporting a prolonged decline in business confidence, marking nine consecutive quarters of negative sentiment. Manufacturers are facing increased production costs driven by labor, energy, and ingredients, with many citing disruptions linked to Middle East conflicts. The Food and Drink Federation warned that while many businesses have absorbed these costs, 72% of manufacturers will eventually need to raise consumer prices to remain viable.
