UK unveils Brontanax loyal‑wingman combat drone at Farnborough Airshow

At the Farnborough International Airshow, the United Kingdom showcased Brontanax, an uncrewed "loyal wingman" drone designed to operate alongside future sixth‑generation fighter aircraft. Developed by BAE Systems under its FalconWorks rapid‑development unit, the demonstrator is part of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (GCAP) programme that includes partners such as Italy, Japan and Canada. Brontanax is intended to expand the combat envelope of manned fighters, performing tasks such as reconnaissance, electronic warfare and strike missions.

GKN Aerospace supplied the complete wing, fin and control‑surface assemblies, manufactured at its Cowes composite facility on the Isle of Wight. The structures were delivered flight‑ready after an accelerated development cycle that began in 2022, supported by more than £400 million of BAE Systems funding and a supply chain of around 75 UK suppliers. The prototype will be powered by a Williams International engine for initial testing, with a later transition planned to a Rolls‑Royce Orpheus powerplant. Power‑on is expected in late Q3 2026, followed by ground trials in the first half of 2027 and a first flight later that year. The project aligns with the RAF’s Storm Fighter requirement and benefits from a £300 million allocation in the UK Defence Investment Plan for loyal‑wingman development.
