UK Brontanax drone programme updates

Overview

The Brontanax, a jet‑powered loyal‑wingman UAV, was publicly displayed at the Farnborough International Airshow on 29 July 2026. Developed by BAE Systems’ FalconWorks rapid‑development unit, the demonstrator forms part of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft programme that also involves Italy, Japan and Canada. The aircraft, roughly the size of a Hawk trainer, features a low‑observable, modular airframe supplied by GKN Aerospace (wing, fin and control‑surface assemblies) and is intended for reconnaissance, electronic‑warfare and precision‑strike missions alongside future sixth‑generation fighters.

The project draws more than £400 million of BAE Systems investment, complemented by a £300 million allocation in the UK Defence Investment Plan under the Storm Fighter requirement. Initial power will come from a Williams International engine, with a later switch to a Rolls‑Royce Orpheus unit. Power‑on is slated for late Q3 2026, followed by ground tests in the first half of 2027 and a first flight later that year.

Brontanax will operate as a loyal‑wingman to manned platforms such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, Tempest and F‑35, and could be deployed from Queen Elizabeth‑class carriers. It remains a key element of the RAF’s ambition to field a sixth‑generation force, may take part in the Steadfast Defender exercise later in 2026, and full entry into service is now targeted for 2027.
