UK water companies implement hosepipe bans amid shortages

Water companies in parts of the United Kingdom have introduced Temporary Use Bans due to water shortages. Thames Water has implemented a ban across its entire supply area, affecting approximately 10.1 million customers in London, the Thames Valley, and the Home Counties.

Under the Thames Water restriction, customers are prohibited from using a hosepipe for domestic gardening, cleaning private vehicles, filling swimming pools or hot tubs, and cleaning patios. While hosepipe use is banned, residents may still use watering cans or buckets for these tasks. Violators of the ban may face fines of up to £1,000, as confirmed by the regulator Ofwat.

In areas served by Affinity Water, such as Ruislip, local authorities are taking proactive measures to conserve resources. Hillingdon Council has chosen to switch off splash pads at Ruislip Lido and Fassnidge Park to reduce non-essential water consumption. Similar conservation efforts have been noted by Newham Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, which has limited its open splash pad facilities to those utilizing water-recycling systems.
