UK water utilities enforce hosepipe bans amid escalating drought

Essex & Suffolk Water announced a temporary hosepipe ban for the East Anglia region after an intense spell of hot weather left soils extremely dry, river flows low and reservoirs at only about 69% of capacity. The ban, effective from August 3, prohibits the use of hosepipes, sprinklers, pressure washers and similar equipment for garden watering, car washing and pool filling. Water demand has risen by an average of 29 million litres per day, roughly the volume of an additional Chelmsford supply area.

Thames Water, which introduced its own ban on July 23, said it will lift restrictions as soon as water levels improve, noting upcoming rain forecasts for Oxfordshire and surrounding counties. Both utilities highlighted the Environment Agency’s declaration of drought across East Anglia and warned of ongoing impacts on wildlife, agriculture and the economy. Directors Kieran Ingram (Essex & Suffolk Water) and Helen Wakeham (Environment Agency) urged the public to continue conserving water to protect supplies and the environment.
