Ukraine develops European satellite alternative to Starlink
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine and Russia are both working toward developing alternatives to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network. Zelensky stated that Russia is collaborating with China on a satellite equivalent, which they expect to complete by December 2026.
To avoid reliance on external providers, Ukraine is currently testing a separate satellite communication project in partnership with a European nation. This move aims to secure battlefield communications and drone guidance capabilities.
Zelensky also expressed hope that Elon Musk might reconsider his current stance on Starlink usage. While Musk has restricted the service from being used for strikes within Russian territory, Zelensky suggested that presenting more arguments regarding the strategic benefits—such as reducing Russia’s ability to prolong the war—could lead to a change in policy.
