Ukraine asks allies for $20 billion to sustain battlefield advantage

Ukraine will submit a request for an additional $20 billion in military financing at the next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, known as the Ramstein Group, which includes more than 50 allied nations. The funding, expected to be contributed as aid or loans of $2‑6 billion per ally, is intended to reinforce and lock in Kyiv’s current battlefield edge over Russia.

Ukrainian officials say there is a six‑to‑nine‑month window to act, citing recent drone strikes that have slowed Russian advances by damaging supply lines and targeting the Russian energy sector. Russian President Vladimir Putin maintains that Russian forces continue to advance and that the Russian economy can withstand the damage.

The request, first reported by Politico and confirmed by the Ukrainian defence ministry, underscores Kyiv’s effort to convert recent operational gains into a longer‑term strategic advantage.
