Black Sea drone warfare disrupts global grain exports

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is increasingly characterized by drone warfare targeting critical maritime and grain infrastructure in the Black Sea. Recent Ukrainian drone and missile strikes on the Russian port of Novorossiysk have halted operations at major grain terminals, including the KSK terminal, causing wheat futures to rise as markets react to potential export disruptions.

These attacks on logistics and shipping infrastructure pose significant risks to global food security. Russia and Ukraine together account for nearly 28% of global wheat exports. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russian attacks on commercial vessels threaten food supplies to Egypt and other African and Middle Eastern nations, leading to price increases and shortages. In response, Ukraine has reportedly proposed to the Kremlin via a third party that attacks on civilian targets in the Black Sea be halted.

Russian grain exports have already seen a decline, with maritime shipments dropping by approximately 20.3% year-on-year in July. The disruption at key ports and the intensification of reciprocal attacks on ports and commercial shipping create volatility in global grain markets, impacting exporters ranging from Australia to Europe.
