Danube River: Drought exposes WWII wrecks amid Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports

Extreme drought and record-breaking heatwaves across Europe have caused water levels in the Danube River to drop to unprecedented lows. In eastern Serbia near Prahovo, the receding waters have exposed the rusted hulls of German warships that have been submerged since 1945. Experts warn that the combination of low water volume and high temperatures threatens river biodiversity by depleting oxygen levels.

The environmental crisis coincides with intensified military activity in the region. Russian drone strikes have targeted the Ukrainian Danube ports of Izmail and Reni, which are critical for grain exports and NATO-linked logistics. Additionally, Russian forces attacked the Majaki bridge on August 9, an action likely intended to disrupt land corridors as maritime export routes become increasingly dangerous.

In response to the ongoing conflict, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Washington to provide at least 5 percent of current US Patriot interceptor stocks to help halt Russian ballistic missile strikes. Meanwhile, Ukraine has conducted retaliatory strikes against the Russian port of Novorossiysk and an oil refinery in Bashkortostan.
