Ukraine deploys AI‑enhanced drones to strike Russian logistics deep behind front lines

Ukrainian armed forces have launched a new campaign targeting Russian logistics far behind the front line. Modified kamikaze drones equipped with Starlink communications and artificial‑intelligence software can fly up to 250 km, identify fuel trucks, tankers, railcars and other high‑value transport, and strike them without direct human control. An officer from the Azov unit said the AI selects targets, guides drones and can coordinate multiple drones in a single attack, with the first tests beginning in winter and operational use from early this year.

Ukrainian officials say the strikes have created serious shortages of fuel and materiel for Russian units. Russia has responded by repainting vehicles with unusual “zebra” camouflage, deploying observers, protective nets and armed patrols to shoot down drones, but so far has not found an effective counter‑measure. The campaign follows a broader increase in Ukrainian long‑range drone and missile attacks on Russian cities and infrastructure that began in January 2026.
