Ukraine‑Russia drone war boosted by Western supplies

Overview

Ukraine has kept expanding its high‑altitude DART balloon‑launched strike system while intensifying low‑cost attack‑drone raids inside Russian territory. After July strikes on the Mikhaylovsk oil refinery, a Lukoil plant in Nizhny Novgorod and several fuel tankers, Ukrainian UAVs continue to target energy and logistics hubs, signalling a shift toward deeper offensive operations.

Russia has responded by accelerating its AI‑enabled UAV programme, fielding upgraded Geran‑2 and Geran‑4 kamikazes, new Sibirjak‑5 quadcopters, Geoskan‑7018 fixed‑wing drones and heavy‑lift Lađa 12 platforms, plus AI‑driven FPV interceptors (Yolka) and upgraded Pantsir‑SMD‑E air‑defence.

Western allies have broadened Ukrainian drone capacity. Germany has financed 50,000 Shrike first‑person‑view attack drones built by SkyFall and equipped with U.S. Auterion autonomous‑targeting software in a €90 million deal; part of the order has arrived, with the remainder due later in the year. This complements a U.S. Pentagon contract for 33,000 similar drones and Britain’s pledge of 150,000 drones, sustaining Kyiv’s high‑tempo UAV operations.

Civilian life in Ukraine is now bearing the daily cost of the drone war. In Cherson, residents such as bus drivers and cultural organizers have adapted to near‑constant drone strikes on public transport and shelters, relying on underground bunkers and mutual aid to keep the city functioning. Similarly, Nikopol’s population faces three‑hourly FPV drone attacks, prompting school closures, service suspensions and the departure of roughly half its residents. These reports highlight how intensified UAV use on both sides is reshaping everyday life for Ukrainians even as Western drone supplies keep expanding Kyiv’s offensive capabilities.
