Ukraine deploys domestically produced FP-7 ballistic missile in combat
Ukraine has conducted the first operational combat use of its domestically produced tactical ballistic missile, the FP-7, also known as the ‘Pelikani’. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the deployment and shared video footage of the launch, though the specific target was not disclosed.
The FP-7 features an operational range of approximately 250 kilometers and can carry a warhead weighing about 200 kilograms. Due to this range, its current utility is primarily focused on targets within Russian border regions.
This development represents a strategic shift for Kyiv, moving beyond its heavy reliance on long-range drones for deep strikes against Russian energy and transport infrastructure. Unlike drones, these ballistic missiles offer higher speeds and trajectories that reduce the reaction time for enemy air defense systems, while also allowing for heavier explosive payloads. The successful deployment highlights Ukraine's efforts to build an independent missile arsenal and reduce dependence on Western-supplied weaponry.
