Ukraine deploys new tank tactics amid Russian jet-drone strikes
Ukraine is implementing new battlefield tactics to counter Russian drone dominance. By utilizing a combination of drone strikes, electronic warfare, and infantry advances, Ukrainian forces have successfully pushed back the Russian 'kill zone,' allowing heavy armor, including British Challenger-2 tanks, to return to the front. This strategy contributed to the recapture of 746 square kilometers of territory during a counteroffensive near Oleksandrivka.
Simultaneously, Russia has introduced new jet-powered Geran-5 drones. These drones fly significantly faster (450 to 600 km/h) and higher (up to 6,000 meters) than previous models, posing a severe challenge to Kyiv's air defenses and civilian safety. Recent strikes on the Pivnichnyi Bridge in Kyiv have caused significant disruption, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko stating that Moscow is 'tearing Kyiv apart.'
Regarding territorial control, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports that Russia lost approximately 81 square kilometers of territory in September, contradicting claims of Russian gains. On October 1, the Ukrainian General Staff reported massive Russian losses, including 37 artillery systems, seven combat robots, and 1,950 units of military equipment and vehicles across 236 battles.
