Ukraine claims downed Russian Su-35 with F-16s and Patriot air defense

The Ukrainian Air Force announced on 8‑9 July 2026 that it shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su‑35 fighter jet over the eastern front. According to Ukrainian statements, the operation used three F‑16 fighter jets in a coordinated “trap” together with a ground‑based Patriot air‑defence system. One F‑16 allegedly flew low to draw the Su‑35 into range, while two others positioned higher prepared to launch AIM‑120 missiles, and the Patriot radar detected and engaged the target. Russian military observers described the loss as a trap, but provided no independent verification, and Russia has not issued an official comment.

If confirmed, this would be the eighth or ninth Su‑35 loss for Russia since the full‑scale invasion began, out of an estimated fleet of about 100 aircraft. The Su‑35 is one of Russia’s most advanced fighters, making the incident notable for demonstrating the combat effectiveness of Western‑supplied F‑16s and Patriot systems when used jointly in Ukraine’s air defence.

No visual evidence of the downed jet has been released, and the claim remains unverified by independent sources.
