Ukraine-Russia drone warfare: Jet-powered drones and tactical lessons
Russia is significantly increasing its use of jet-powered attack drones in its campaign against Ukraine. According to Col. Yurii Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, these high-speed drones now account for as much as two-thirds of certain Russian drone attacks. These newer models, such as the Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5, can reach speeds between 200 and 375 mph, making them much harder for air defenses to intercept than previous propeller-driven versions.
Simultaneously, the evolving drone landscape is providing critical combat lessons for Western militaries. During the Combined Resolve exercise in Germany, Ukrainian drone operators demonstrated their effectiveness by quickly locating and defeating U.S. Army troops and armored vehicles, despite the presence of standard electronic-warfare and counter-drone systems. Additionally, Ukrainian drone strikes have demonstrated increased range, recently hitting a major Russian refinery located approximately 800 miles from the Ukrainian border.
