Starlink and Starshield services restored in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Starlink and Starshield satellite internet services have returned to full operational speeds, exceeding 400 km/h, following a period of technical restrictions in October. The restoration, which began overnight on October 24, is considered vital for frontline logistics, drone operations, and defense against Russian attacks.

The service disruptions followed allegations from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk that the Ukrainian military violated Starlink’s terms of use by employing the commercial service for offensive drone strikes. Musk stated that the “loophole was closed last week,” though he noted that Starshield is a separate system controlled by the US government.

Zelenskyy attributed the restoration of services and the resumption of US intelligence alerts regarding imminent Russian ballistic missile strikes to a meeting in Oslo on October 20 with US special envoy Steve Witkoff. While the White House and SpaceX have not explicitly confirmed the cause of the previous speed limitations, the return to high-speed connectivity significantly enhances Ukraine’s ability to coordinate rapid military movements and interceptor drones.
