Kiev missile‑drone strike kills 17, urges more air defenses
Russian forces launched a barrage of 24 ballistic missiles and 115 drones against Kiev and its surrounding region, killing 17 civilians and wounding 44. The attacks hit civilian sites, including a brewery, a construction‑material depot, a logistics centre and a railway station, and sparked large fires and an ammonia leak at an industrial plant.
Ukrainian air defenses shot down 98 unmanned aerial vehicles but failed to intercept any of the ballistic missiles. President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed the shortage of air‑defence interceptors for the deaths and urged Western allies to accelerate deliveries of systems such as Patriot missiles.
U.S. President Donald Trump declined Zelensky’s request for additional Patriot interceptors, saying U.S. stocks are needed for operations in the Middle East. Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani condemned the attacks as violations of international law, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he discussed the strike with Zelensky and called on allies to provide stronger air‑defence support for Ukraine.
