Ukraine seeks 5.4 billion euros to secure energy grid before winter
Ukraine is preparing for its fifth consecutive winter under wartime conditions, facing significant challenges to its energy infrastructure. While the government reports improved preparedness compared to last year—citing increased emergency power sources, better-protected facilities, and expanded repair capacities—critical vulnerabilities remain.
Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi noted that while repair teams and equipment have been bolstered, Russia has simultaneously increased its offensive capabilities by stockpiling missiles and faster jet drones. The country requires approximately 5.4 billion euros in funding to secure its energy supply, a sum that has not yet been fully pledged.
Energy expert Andrian Prokip highlighted that the heat supply remains the most vulnerable part of the system. He also warned of a shortage in air defense capabilities specifically required to intercept ballistic missiles, which could leave the grid exposed to massive strikes.
