Ukraine escalates strikes inside Russia amid shifting U.S. relations

Following a period of intense diplomatic tension between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine has significantly escalated its military operations within Russian territory. Despite earlier criticisms from the Trump administration regarding Ukraine’s position in the conflict, Kyiv has successfully deployed drones to strike Russian bombers, air defenses, and critical oil infrastructure.

These long-range strikes have had notable domestic impacts in Russia, including causing a summer fuel crisis and targeting areas such as St. Petersburg. While Ukraine has increased its weapon production and strike capabilities, it continues to face defensive challenges due to shortages of American Patriot air defense missiles.

Humanitarian costs remain high; according to the U.N., 1,396 civilians were killed in Ukraine during the first six months of the year. Meanwhile, recent strikes on Russian oil refineries have resulted in civilian casualties, including 13 deaths reported by local officials following a Monday strike.
