Ukraine-Russia conflict and US diplomatic tensions

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has seen a period of heightened military and diplomatic volatility. Following intense friction in early 2025 between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy—which included a temporary suspension of intelligence sharing—Ukraine escalated long-range drone strikes against Russian air defenses, oil infrastructure, and military assets. These operations have contributed to a fuel crisis within Russia and caused damage in cities such as St. Petersburg.

In response to these escalations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the United States of direct involvement, alleging that Washington provides the intelligence and support necessary for strikes on Russian territory. Moscow has vowed to intensify efforts to destroy Western military shipments intended for Ukraine.

On the diplomatic front, while Lavrov rejected a conflict freeze along current lines, he indicated that President Vladimir Putin remains open to receiving American envoys, specifically mentioning Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, provided their proposals are acceptable.
