Ukraine expands strategic influence through maritime and drone technology

The scope of the conflict in Ukraine is expanding beyond traditional front lines to include critical trade routes, energy infrastructure, and surveillance zones. In the Black Sea, the merchant vessel Khoryv sank approximately thirteen nautical miles from Constanta, Romania, following a drone strike on October 23. Bucharest has attributed the attack to Russia. This incident highlights the increasing risks to maritime logistics and the security of NATO’s eastern flank, particularly regarding Ukrainian exports moving through the Danube delta toward the Mediterranean.

Simultaneously, Ukraine is attempting to enter the African drone market, challenging Turkish influence in regions like Libya and the Sahel. Reports suggest that Ukrainian drones equipped with Shield AI software and Starlink satellite communication terminals arrived at Misurata airport in Libya on October 3. The distribution of such advanced technology to various armed groups and militias could alter the local military landscape and impact the strategic interests of established actors like Turkey.
