Ukraine drone operations and maritime security
Overview
Ukraine has established a continuous drone presence over Crimea, marking a significant shift in aerial activity over the peninsula. The Ukraine Unmanned Systems Forces reported that the 414th Madiara Birds Brigade conducted over seven thousand missions during the summer as part of ‘Operation Crimea’. These operations involve long-range flights targeting Russian detection and interception systems, including Nebo SV and Pe-18 radar elements, communication equipment near Olenivka, a relay station near Frunze, and a military training center in Sevastopol.
The conflict has also impacted maritime security in the Black Sea. On October 23, the merchant vessel Khoryv sank approximately thirteen nautical miles from Constanta, Romania, following a drone strike. Bucharest has attributed this attack to Russia, highlighting increased risks to maritime logistics and the security of NATO’s eastern flank.
