Ukraine eyes anti-ballistic missile systems via €90 billion EU loan

Ukraine is considering using a €90 billion European Union loan to acquire anti-ballistic missile systems to bolster its air defenses. Discussions are ongoing regarding whether Kyiv will procure the American-made Patriot system or the European Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG ground-to-air system. An official indicated that the next procurement order, which may also include drones and missiles, is expected before September.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently addressed a Russian attack that killed at least 16 people and wounded 33, stating that the EU and its partners are working to support Ukraine’s anti-ballistic capabilities to prevent further loss of life.

The choice of weaponry has sparked debate within the EU. Some member states, including France, advocate for using EU financial support to purchase European-made arms to bolster the continent's defense industry. Conversely, other nations, including Finland, Sweden, Poland, and the Baltic states, have called for greater flexibility, arguing that Ukraine’s urgent military needs should be the primary focus.
