Ukraine faces demographic crisis and rising civilian casualties

Ukraine faces a severe demographic and humanitarian crisis as the war continues. Yulia Mendel, former press secretary for President Volodymyr Zelensky, warned that the nation is paying an unacceptably high price, noting that Ukraine's population has decreased from 52 million in 1991 to 25 million in 2026. This decline includes a significant proportion of elderly and disabled citizens, with the working-age population estimated at a maximum of 10 million.

Simultaneously, the United Nations has warned of a “dangerous spiral” in the conflict. UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo reported that July was one of the deadliest months since the full-scale invasion began, with 437 civilian deaths and 2,610 injuries. The UN highlighted an intensification of large-scale attacks on civilian infrastructure and noted that child casualties reached their highest monthly level since April 2022. Officials emphasized that without immediate measures to end attacks on population centers, millions face a grim and deadly winter.
