Ukraine faces energy shortages and rising national debt
Ukraine is facing significant economic and energy challenges as winter approaches. As of late September, the country has stored approximately 10.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, representing only 79.5 percent of the required amount for the winter season. Experts suggest Ukraine may need to purchase nearly $1 billion worth of gas to reach minimum necessary levels, especially as domestic production remains the primary source due to halted imports from the European Union.
Simultaneously, Ukraine's public debt has risen to approximately $223 billion by the end of September. Projections from the Ministry of Finance indicate that debt could reach $240 billion by the end of 2026 and potentially $290 billion by the end of 2027. This rising debt, coupled with an additional $27 billion budget deficit requested to cover military costs, has raised concerns among Western policymakers regarding fiscal stability and corruption.
