Ukraine grain exports face crisis amid Black Sea blockade
Ukrainian farmers are facing a severe crisis as Russian attacks in the Black Sea disrupt agricultural exports during the peak harvest season. Approximately 90% of Ukraine's exports, including wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds, rely on Black Sea shipping routes. The blockade has left massive quantities of produce stranded in warehouses, causing local prices to drop while production costs remain high.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that a proposal for a ceasefire regarding attacks on grain-carrying vessels was rejected by Russia. Moscow has reportedly conditioned any cessation of attacks on the grain corridor on Ukraine stopping strikes against Russian energy infrastructure.
Agriculture Minister Taras Visotsky noted that Ukraine has exported only about 500,000 tons of grain since the beginning of August, representing roughly one-fifth of its capacity. The lack of revenue from current sales threatens future planting seasons, as farmers struggle to afford fuel, labor, and supplies for autumn sowing.
