Ukraine hoists flag on Kinburn Spit, indicating Russian pullback
On June 26, 2026 the Ukrainian flag was raised on the Kinburn Spit in the Mykolaiv region, the first such display since 2022. Ukrainian navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletentjuk said the flag was placed by a drone after Russian forces withdrew from the position following heavy artillery fire.
The peninsula, which overlooks the Black Sea and the supply routes to Crimea and Kherson, has long been the westernmost point held by Russian troops. While the pullback marks a setback for Moscow, Ukrainian officials stressed that the area is not yet fully secured and no large‑scale offensive is planned. The development comes amid continued Ukrainian drone attacks that have disrupted Russian logistics.
