Ukraine intensifies eastern defenses amid Russian breakthroughs

Fighting has intensified in eastern Ukraine as Russian forces increase pressure on key cities in the Donetsk region, including Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, and Sloviansk. Reports indicate that Russian troops have achieved a breakthrough at the Orikhiv bridgehead, leading to street fighting within the city.

In response, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed experienced military commanders Andrii Biletskyi and Denys Prokopenko to lead regional defenses in the east. While Ukraine reports having reclaimed over 700 square kilometers of territory in the southeast, the military faces significant challenges regarding air defense aid and manpower. Zelenskyy has expressed concerns that Russia may recruit an additional 300,000 soldiers following its upcoming parliamentary elections in September.
