Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine – late July 2026

Entities: Pokrovsk · Donetsk region · Novorossiysk port · Vladimir Putin · European Union

Overview

The Russian offensive that began in late June kept evolving through July. After fighting over Kostiantynivka intensified in mid‑July, Ukrainian officials continued to assert control while Russian statements claimed the city’s capture. On 26 July, Russian military officials told President Putin that Kostiantynivka and the nearby village of Shevchenko had been taken, describing the town as a strategic defensive hub. Ukrainian authorities gave no comment and independent verification was pending.

Two days later, on 28 July, the Russian army announced that its troops had captured the town of Krasni Kut in Donetsk province, citing “decisive actions of the Central Group of the Armed Forces.” No Ukrainian response was reported, and third‑party verification remained lacking. The claim follows earlier Russian reports of seizing Krasny Liman, Volnovoy, Linna and advancing toward Druzhkova and Alekseeyevo‑Druzhkovka. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also reshuffled his chief of staff, appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi. The situation remains fluid, with both sides issuing competing reports on control of key settlements on the Donetsk front.
