Ukraine blames Patriot interceptor shortage for deadly Kyiv strike
In a massive night attack on Kyiv, Russian forces launched 115 drones, 24 ballistic missiles and four hypersonic missiles. Ukrainian air defenses shot down 98 drones but failed to intercept any of the ballistic missiles, resulting in at least 17 deaths and dozens of injuries across the capital.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles directly caused the casualties, noting that deliveries of such missiles have fallen to roughly one‑third of the previous year’s volume. He urged European and American partners to accelerate supplies, recalling a U.S. pledge to grant a licence for domestic Patriot production that was later delayed.
The human toll included the death of 20‑year‑old student Vitalina Yarovenko, who was assisting victims of an earlier strike. She received a military‑style funeral attended by hundreds in Kyiv’s St. Michael’s Cathedral and Independence Square.
