Ukraine hits Iranian-linked cargo vessel in Caspian Sea, one sailor killed

Ukrainian forces carried out long‑range strikes in the Caspian Sea, targeting a Russian warship and vessels used for transporting Iranian military cargo. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the operation on X, saying “we achieved very strong results with long‑range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran.”

One of the struck ships was an Iranian‑registered commercial vessel. An explosion on board killed a sailor and injured another. Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as “an act of aggression that risks further fueling the flames of war” and a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, warning that Tehran would defend its national interests and security and could respond if necessary. The incident brings Iran, Russia, and Ukraine into direct confrontation over a strategic waterway, widening the scope of the war and raising diplomatic tensions among the three countries.

The strike underscores Ukraine’s expanding reach with drone and missile technology and the growing importance of the Caspian corridor for Russian‑Iranian military logistics.
