Ukraine poised to appoint Naftogaz CEO Shery Koretsky as new prime minister
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reportedly nominated Shery Koretsky, the chief executive of state oil and gas firm Naftogaz, to succeed the departing prime minister. Two sources cited by The Kyiv Independent say the proposal was made during a meeting held yesterday and that the parliament could confirm the appointment as early as Thursday.
Koretsky’s potential elevation follows a broader government reshuffle announced by Zelensky. The same briefing noted that a new EU sanctions package against Russia is close to approval, that nine European countries have formed a missile‑defence coalition with Ukraine, and that recent Russian attacks injured civilians in Odessa and damaged a Togo‑flagged vessel loading fertilizer.
If confirmed, Koretsky would lead the cabinet at a time when Kyiv is seeking to tighten economic pressure on Moscow while bolstering its defence capabilities.
