Ukraine publishing industry faces massive losses from Russian strikes

The Ukrainian publishing industry is facing a severe crisis following Russian attacks that have destroyed millions of books. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture, more than 13 million books—approximately one-third of the country's annual production—have been destroyed within the last two months. Financial losses are estimated at a minimum of $39.3 million.

A major strike occurred on August 1 in Kharkiv, targeting the Ranok publishing house, a critical infrastructure hub for book storage and distribution. Two Russian Shahed drones hit the facility, causing a massive fire that burned for nearly a week and led to the collapse of the building's roof. The attack destroyed approximately 8 million books, including 620,000 school textbooks intended for students nationwide.

At least 40 publishing houses and numerous bookstores have sustained damage. Tetiana Berezna, Ukraine's Minister of Culture, stated that these strikes are not random but part of a deliberate policy to eliminate Ukrainian cultural identity and heritage. Beyond the publishing sector, nearly 5,000 cultural sites, including museums and churches, have been damaged or destroyed since the start of the invasion.
