Russian attacks on Ukrainian book warehouses

Overview

The Ukrainian publishing industry is facing a severe crisis following Russian strikes that have destroyed an estimated 13 million books over a two-month period. This loss represents approximately one-third of the country’s annual book production. Financial losses are estimated at a minimum of $39.3 million.

On 1 August 2026, a strike involving two Russian Shahed drones hit the Ranok publishing warehouse in Kharkiv. The resulting fire, which burned for nearly a week and caused the building’s roof to collapse, destroyed approximately 8 million books, including 620,000 school textbooks. Ranok director Viktor Kruglov described the strike as “an attack on Ukrainian education and culture.”

In total, at least 40 publishing houses and numerous bookstores have sustained damage. A recent missile strike on the Konvi printing house near Kyiv destroyed machinery intended for 1.3 million textbooks, roughly 10% of the national supply required for the upcoming school year.

Beyond the publishing sector, the strikes have impacted museums, libraries, and the UNESCO-protected Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. Ukraine’s Minister of Culture, Tetiana Berezna, characterized these actions as a deliberate policy to “eliminate Ukrainian cultural identity and heritage,” noting that nearly 5,000 cultural sites have been damaged or destroyed since the start of the invasion.
