Ukraine recovers territory in Donetsk amid Russian drone strikes on Kyiv

Ukraine counteroffensive Donetsk region Operation Vivaldi Russian drone strikes Kyiv infrastructure

Ukraine has achieved its first net territorial gain in three months, recovering approximately 80 square kilometers of land during September. According to analysis of Institute for the Study of War (ISW) data, the Ukrainian counteroffensive, known as Operation Vivaldi, successfully reclaimed about 172 square kilometers in the Donetsk region to protect the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

Despite these gains, the conflict remains characterized by a heavily fortified front line and a lethal “death zone” patrolled by drones. While Ukraine made progress in Donetsk, Russian forces reported seizing territory in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions, capturing approximately 104.5 and 20 square kilometers respectively.

In Kyiv, Russian drone strikes have targeted critical infrastructure, including the Southern Bridge, causing significant traffic disruptions and damage to bridge supports. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to the escalating aerial attacks by calling for increased international sanctions to disrupt Russia's production of advanced jet drones.
