Ukraine requests emergency UN Security Council meeting amid Russian strikes
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following intensified Russian strikes on civilian targets. The attacks, occurring around October 7–8, have resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating approximately 100 civilians killed in various regions, including Kyiv, Pryluky, and Kramatorsk, over a one-week period.
Sybiha stated that Russia is targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure to deprive the population of heat and light ahead of winter. He also highlighted that attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea pose a threat to global food security. Furthermore, the minister addressed the use of Belarusian infrastructure for Russian drone strikes, calling on Minsk to cease such support.
Regarding international policy, Sybiha warned that easing sanctions on Russia sends a “wrong signal” that could prolong the conflict. He urged the Security Council to move beyond discussions and adopt resolutions that demand an end to Russian aggression, the protection of civilians, and the withdrawal of troops in accordance with the UN Charter.
