Ukraine-Russia war: Slow territorial shifts in Donbas amid intensified strikes

The conflict in Ukraine remains a war of attrition, characterized by slow territorial shifts and intense aerial warfare. In the Donbas region, Russian forces continue to launch heavy attacks targeting the strategic Ukrainian fortress belt, including Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. While Moscow seeks to capture the remainder of the Donetsk region, recent Ukrainian counterattacks near Lyman have complicated Russian movements and forced changes in command plans.

On the ground, territorial changes are minimal, with some analysts attributing small gains to Russia and others noting minor losses. In the north and near Lyman, reports of Russian encirclements have been disputed by independent mapping projects and drone footage. Meanwhile, Russia has intensified its campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure. Recent ballistic missile strikes have disabled major steel plants, significantly impacting Ukraine’s industrial capacity and employment.

In the Kupiansk area, small groups of Russian infantry continue to penetrate urban zones, where Ukrainian forces engage them. The fighting remains most concentrated in the Pokrovsk, Dobropillia, and Kostyantynivka sectors, representing the primary axes of the current ground offensive.
