Ukraine Secures Gripen Fighter Jets and Meteor Missiles from Sweden

Sweden has agreed to transfer 16 older JAS‑39 C/D Gripen fighters to Ukraine, providing extensive training, weapon systems and spare parts. The value of the transfer is estimated at €2.3 billion, with deliveries set to begin in early 2027.

In addition, Ukraine will purchase 20 new JAS‑39 E/F Gripen aircraft, scheduled for delivery from 2030 onward, under a contract worth about €2.5 billion. The procurement is being financed through an EU loan programme of €90 billion, with the first tranche expected in June 2026. The deal includes the integration of Meteor long‑range BVR missiles, a €2 million per‑missile system used by several NATO air forces.

Experts say the addition of Gripen jets and Meteor missiles will enhance Ukraine's air‑defence capabilities and force the Russian Air Force to operate more cautiously in the ongoing conflict.
