Ukraine seeks international aid to cover defense and budget gaps

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the European Union and the International Monetary Fund recognize the necessity of assisting Kyiv in financing its budget deficit and defense requirements. Ukraine is seeking an additional $27 billion this year for defense to counter intensified long-range drone and missile attacks. For next year, the country anticipates needing more than $52 billion in international financial aid to cover social, humanitarian, and budgetary costs.

Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko noted that an IMF mission for a second review of Ukraine’s financing program is expected in November. Meanwhile, domestic economic strain is evident as the Fozzy Group reported that Russian attacks have damaged over 20 of its facilities, including distribution centers and supermarkets, forcing staff layoffs.

Criticism regarding the funding gap has emerged from Yulia Mendel, a former presidential spokeswoman. Mendel argued that Ukraine lacks a sustainable plan to cover its multi-billion-dollar deficit without continuous Western infusions and suggested that progress on reforms in taxation and governance remains a concern for international partners.
