Ukraine strikes Russian oil refineries, disabling 45% of processing capacity

Ukrainian defense forces have significantly impacted Russia’s energy infrastructure through a series of targeted strikes on oil refineries. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, these operations have successfully disabled more than 45% of Russia’s oil processing capacity during the period of September 14 to September 20.

Specific targets included the Syzran refinery in the Samara region, where primary processing units and storage tanks were damaged. In Yaroslavl, the Slavneft-JANOS plant suffered damage to its primary crude oil processing units. Additionally, a strike on the Kapotnya refinery near Moscow damaged critical processing and isomerization units, forcing a suspension of operations.

These strikes aim to disrupt the logistics, fuel supply, and economic resources required to sustain the Russian military's long-term war efforts. Analysts note that the conflict is increasingly resembling a total war, characterized by a shift from purely military targets to the systematic destruction of energy, industrial, and communication infrastructure.
