Poland Offers Modernized MiG‑29 Fighters to Ukraine, Funding to Be Covered by Kyiv or Allies

Polish defence minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz said Poland is ready to assist Ukraine in modernising its MiG‑29 fighter jets, but the upgrade costs must be borne by Ukraine or its partner states. The talks include a possible exchange of Ukrainian drone technology for the modernised aircraft, and Kosiniak‑Kamysz noted that "there are many more good news than a few days ago". Previously, Poland supplied around 14 MiG‑29s to Ukraine, many of which served as a source of spare parts, and Ukraine had expressed concerns over the technical condition of the planes. Polish generals reiterated the importance of reciprocal cooperation and the need for both sides to benefit.

Separately, Sweden confirmed that the Meteor air‑to‑air missiles supplied with its JAS 39 Gripen fighters can be used by Ukraine without any usage restrictions, enhancing Kyiv’s ability to strike targets at longer ranges. These parallel deals reflect a broader push by NATO allies to bolster Ukraine’s air capabilities through modern equipment and technology swaps.
