Ukraine develops high-speed interceptor drones to counter Russian jet-powered attacks

Ukraine is developing and testing a new generation of high-speed interceptor drones to counter Russia’s increasing use of jet-powered attack drones. These Russian drones, which function similarly to missiles, are significantly faster than conventional propeller-driven models, making them harder for existing air defense systems to track and intercept. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine is currently destroying approximately 57% of these jet-powered drones, a lower success rate compared to the 85% to 90% achieved against standard drones.

To address this threat, Ukrainian manufacturers are testing five different interceptor models. One specific model, the Zorelit v5, can reach speeds of 416 kilometers per hour. Zelenskyy noted that one of the five models could reach a production capacity of roughly 400 units by the end of October. Kyrylo Budanow, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, emphasized the urgency of scaling production before the peak of winter, noting that manufacturing sufficient quantities remains the primary challenge.

Ukraine also intends to share this interception technology with European partners who have established drone-related cooperation agreements, known as ‘Drone Deals.’ These partners include Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Such cooperation aims to facilitate technology transfer, joint production, and the exchange of military expertise to bolster regional defenses.
