Ukraine turns to private security to defend against Russian drone attacks

Ukraine is facing significant economic and infrastructural challenges due to intensified Russian drone and missile attacks. These strikes target critical sectors including energy, grain exports, steel production, and logistics hubs, such as warehouses and railway transport. Ukrainian officials warn of a difficult winter ahead, with the economy potentially seeing a 1.5 percent reduction in GDP due to these disruptions and maritime port blockades.

To combat the persistent drone threat that overwhelms official air force resources, the Ukrainian government has authorized a pilot program for private anti-drone defense units. As of late August, 51 companies have been approved to operate. This emerging market includes traditional private security firms, specialized drone manufacturers like Dykie Shershni and General Cherry, and large economic groups creating internal defense services. Some companies, such as Carmine Sky, utilize remote-operated weaponry to protect industrial assets.

In the industrial sector, the steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih reported infrastructure damage and fatalities following a recent strike. The ongoing targeting of revenue-generating industries poses a long-term threat to the nation's ability to recover quickly.
