Ukraine utilizes AI and leader-follower drone technology

Ukraine is increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence and advanced drone architectures to enhance its military capabilities on the battlefield. Recent footage suggests the implementation of a ‘Leader-Follower’ setup, where a single operator can guide multiple FPV drones to strike a target in rapid succession, similar to a Gatling gun burst. This technology could help address the challenge of managing the vast numbers of drones Ukraine aims to produce, which includes a target of 7 million units by 2026.

Beyond flight mechanics, the conflict serves as a massive real-world training ground for AI models. Video data captured by drones over Russian troops, vehicles, and infrastructure is being used to train algorithms to automatically recognize silhouettes and targets under diverse combat conditions. While this allows for automated target annotation and improved reconnaissance, it raises ethical concerns regarding the use of footage containing soldiers and civilians as training data without consent.
