Ukraine War Defies Expert Forecasts as Conflict Rages On

The war in Ukraine has continued into a fourth year with a heavy human toll. Estimates cite more than 400,000 Ukrainian deaths and a death rate of roughly seven people per day, underscoring the conflict’s brutal intensity.

Before Russia’s full‑scale invasion, several Western experts predicted a rapid Russian victory. In a February 2022 Washington Post piece, Robert Kagan wrote that Kyiv could fall within days and that Ukraine would cease to exist as an independent state. General Mark Milley told Congress the capital might be captured in three days, and President Biden offered to evacuate President Volodymyr Zelensky, who replied, “I need ammunition, not a ride.” Those forecasts proved wrong; Ukraine still controls its capital and remains in active resistance.
