Ukraine war faces heightened escalation risk as European support shifts

European analysts note that the continent is entering the second half of the decade burdened by high energy costs, an aging population and a weakened industrial base. Support for Ukraine has become entrenched in EU mechanisms – loans, sanctions, arms contracts and logistics corridors – turning political statements into technocratic management and making it difficult for individual governments to withdraw their aid.

Czech security expert Petr Drulák warned that “we are before a very dangerous phase of the Ukrainian war, which threatens massive destructive losses.” He said the conflict could see a sharp escalation, with Russia potentially launching larger conventional attacks and radical voices inside Russia calling for more extreme measures, including the threat of tactical nuclear use. Drulák also highlighted the United States’ symbolic offer to help Ukraine produce Patriot systems and the broader risk that the war may intensify rather than move toward peace.
