Ukraine war prompts EU sanction extension and Kyiv air alert
The European Union has extended its restrictive measures against Russia for a further year, now running until 31 July 2027. As part of the EU’s €90 billion loan programme for Ukraine, the first disbursement of €3.2 billion was made.
On 26 June 2026, Ukrainian air defenses issued an air‑alert for Kyiv and several regions after a missile was detected over the capital. Explosions were reported and missile debris fell in Kyiv’s Darnytsky district, igniting a fire in a warehouse. President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced a 40‑day intelligence operation aimed at pressuring Russia to end the war.
These developments underscore the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, the EU’s continued economic and political response, and the immediate security threats faced by Ukrainian civilians.
