Germany accuses Russia of Leipzig airport drone attack

The German government has formally accused Russia of responsibility for a hybrid attack involving explosive-laden drones at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4. According to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, intelligence and police investigations indicate that the technology and operational patterns used are consistent with Russian state-linked activities. The drones were reportedly targeting Ukrainian cargo aircraft, specifically an Antonov AN-124.

In response, Berlin has announced several retaliatory measures, including the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn effective September 18 and the termination of the contract for the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin. Germany also plans to tighten entry controls for Russian citizens and increase pressure on the Russian ‘shadow fleet’ used to bypass sanctions.

The European Union and NATO have expressed solidarity with Germany, with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stating that hybrid attacks will not go unanswered.

Russia has rejected the allegations. President Vladimir Putin described the sanctions as a ‘serious error’ and accused Germany of falsifying evidence to divert attention from domestic issues. The Russian Foreign Ministry characterized the accusations as ‘absurd’ and a ‘hastily assembled provocation,’ warning of reciprocal measures.
