Ukraine's 11th‑century Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv hit by Russian strike, nine dead

A new wave of Russian air attacks on Ukraine on Sunday night killed nine people: four civilians in Kyiv and five rescue workers who were trying to extinguish a fire in Kharkiv. The strikes caused severe damage to the Dormition Cathedral, the main building of Kyiv's Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO‑listed world‑heritage site dating from the 11th century.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as one of the biggest Russian crimes against Christian culture. The cathedral, which was largely rebuilt after World War II, has previously been struck in the war. The same raids also hit the Arsenal Museum, a historic Ukrainian film studio and a collection of centuries‑old clothing, while Ukraine earlier targeted a museum in Crimea devoted to the 1854–1855 Sevastopol defence, damaging a large painting by Franz Roubaud.
