Ukraine's Foreign Minister Says Kyiv Ready for Unconditional Ceasefire with Russia
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha told a panel at the NATO summit in Ankara that Kyiv is prepared to accept an unconditional ceasefire with Russia, but stressed that any realistic peace would require the United States to take a leading role in the process. He said a future agreement must contain legally binding bilateral security guarantees from the United States, and warned that if peace is broken Ukraine would still need on‑ground military support, progress toward EU membership and a stronger deterrent force.
The remarks were made during a discussion titled “Turning the Tables: Ukraine as a Security Provider for Europe.” Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen and Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard also spoke, highlighting the Netherlands’ increased defence spending and urging greater financial assistance for Ukraine, while noting the disproportionate NATO support contributed by the Nordic countries.
